The Two of Disks in the Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot, entitled “Change,” represents the foundational cosmogram of material manifestation, capturing the primordial mechanics of the physical universe. Positioned Qabalistically as Chokmah within the suit of Earth, or Assiah, it illustrates the descent of divine wisdom into the sphere of tangible reality.
The raw, unformed potential established in the Ace of Disks is here subjected to the first principles of duality and motion. Astrologically corresponding to Jupiter in Capricorn, the card embodies a profound paradox: the expansive, benevolent, and philosophical nature of Jupiter constrained and structured by the rigid, earthen boundaries of Capricorn. This planetary alignment dictates that true material stability cannot exist in absolute stasis; rather, it is maintained through a continuous, structured, and harmonious oscillation.
Central to the visual architecture of the card is the great Ouroboros, the serpent that devours its own tail. Crowned to signify its sovereignty over the material plane, the serpent forms the geometric lemniscate, the figure-eight loop of infinity. This infinite loop demonstrates that the universe is sustained by endless cyclical consumption and regeneration. The serpent’s skin scales the entire breadth of the physical world, representing the boundaries of time and space within which all matter must circulate. By biting its own tail, the Ouroboros negates linear progression, establishing instead a closed system of cosmic thermodynamics where nothing is created or destroyed, but merely subjected to perpetual transmutation. Encircled within the two loops of the infinite serpent are two distinct disks, functioning as the dynamic engines of this eternal mechanism.
These disks are rendered as the Taijitu, the traditional symbol of Yin and Yang, illustrating the absolute necessity of polar opposition to generate energetic friction. Within these rotational forms, the four classical elements are systematically distributed.
The upper disk contains the energetic polarity of Fire and Water, the active and passive principles of generation and dissolution.

The lower disk contains the structural polarity of Air and Earth, the intellect and the physical manifestation.
Together, these spinning disks act as gyroscopes for the physical universe. Their constant, alternating revolution prevents material reality from collapsing into inertia.
This card is the ultimate representation of harmonious change.
The dense symbolism embedded within the artwork by Lady Frieda Harris demands an understanding of the slow, tectonic shifts of existence.
The Two of Disks does not represent the sudden, explosive genesis of the universe, but rather the impossibly slow, deliberate, and aeonic movements of matter that form mountains, carve valleys, and regulate the seasons.
It is the rhythmic pulse of gain and loss, growth and decay, expansion and contraction. The universe dances in a state of delicate equilibrium, where every action is immediately balanced by a corresponding reaction.
Therefore, “Change” is not merely a disruption of the established order, but the very mechanism by which the established order survives. To resist this cosmic momentum is to invite stagnation and eventual decay. The Two of Disks decrees that the highest wisdom of the physical plane is to recognize the infinite loop of the crowned serpent and to align one’s material endeavors with the relentless, cyclical rhythms of the cosmos.
